bobCollignon: FOCUS…it's OverRated
A Collegial Conversational Convocation of Chums

A show where thoughtful repartee, incisive inquiry and political correctness go to die. Through the blur of focus my chums and I reconstruct the walls of common sense and then tear them right back down again.
4/6/17 One Bullet, One Brain: the FOCUS… It’s OverRated Bad Poetry Show
Eschewing rhyme or reason, the chums (Carl Thiel, Kenn Morgan and bobCollignon) set out to destroy as much poetry as we can in as many languages as possible. We are joined by a plethorum of poets, namely the schizophrenic Robert Raithel, ‘Boboosh’ Raithelovich, ‘Bobchen’ Raithmüeller, the manly and singular George Grace, a special appearance by Elmer Fudd, and another Russian guy who no one will admit to inviting! Listen as bobC presents a batch of haikum he wrote about Godzilla while the rest of us seek to read verse even worse. Among the ‘pomey’ topics discussed are rockin’ Tokyo, Kaiser hooks, the incorrigible Little Willie, casual dating, and blues haikum. And to help our listeners stay awake during the tedious poetical drone, we toss in diverse audio selections by Allen Ginsberg, J.S. Bach, Blue Oyster Cult, Leonard Cohen, Robin Williams and Bela Lugosi, and conclude the show with a stirring version of that unofficial Third Reich theme, ‘Horst Wessel Lied.’

3/7/17 The FOCUS… It’s OverRated Paleo Yabba Dabba Dooooo Hominid Show
From lemurs to femurs to great apes and other mammals, we unearth all things prehistoric in a show about paleontology. The chums (Carl ‘Chalcolithic’ Thiel, Kenn ‘Umbopo’ Morgan and ‘bipedal’ bobCollignon) demonstrate that they haven’t evolved all that much beyond their Neolithic forebears in a peripatetic discussion about anthropology with special guest Eric Evinczik (geshundheit!) who actually knows what he’s talking about when it comes to evolutionary theory, dinosaurs and Ray Harryhausen. Kenny proves yet again that he is thoroughly incapable of following direction. Nonetheless, you don’t need a Carbon-14 test to appreciate Kenny’s Poetic Recitation of nineteenth century verse about Darwin. And to help our listeners rock with the cavemen, we’ve pulled from the bowels of our own man caves diverse song selections by Kinky Friedman, the Firesign Theatre, the Beach Boys, Tommy Steele, Billy Preston, Nervous Norvus, Eric Weissberg & Steve Mandell, and Johnny Cash. The beginning of this show was enhanced by the technical assistance of Mr. Joseph Rozler. And remember kids! Cave men and dinosaurs DID NOT CO-EXIST.

2/1/17 The FOCUS… It’s OverRated Comestible, Culinary Cooking Show
The Chowhound Chums (Kenn Morgan, Carl Thiel and bobC) gather around the table with our C.I.A.-trained guest chef-slash-assassin, Tony ‘Fig’ Newton, to talk food, fast and otherwise, you know … vittles, comestibles, kwi-zeen. We try not to talk with our mouths full, but over the course of the hour we still learn about dough-hos, meat suits, licorice as a food group, alternate uses for piping bags, and the dangers of a working kitchen. Kenn impresses us all with his knowledge of Welsh pasties. We also feature the return of stupid science questions. Our alimentary song selections are by James ‘Red’ Holloway, R. Crumb & His Cheap-Suit Serenaders, the Solotones, the Treniers, and Little Jimmy Dickens. Oh! And the word for today is ‘seaweed.’

1/10/17 The FOCUS… It’s OverRated Brewski Showski (or Notes are Good)
Beer, ale, suds, lager, pilsners, brewskis … whatever you call it, tonight’s show is all about America’s favorite alcoholic beverage. The Chums (Kenn Morgan, Carl Thiel and bobC) are back in the studio to talk all things beer. But it's not just us ... also on board are two local home-brewers, Steve Macdonald and Jason Dunshie, who enlighten us in the ancient art and science and magic of beer-making (also known as zymurgy). In this hour, we learn about malts, stouts, yeasts, fermentation, the importance of enjoying beer at the correct temperature, and exploding beer bottles. We describe the best and worst beers we’ve ever had. All this while sampling home brew and noshing on pretzels and Linda C’s pickled eggs. Our bibulous song selections are by Clean Living (yep, that was a band), Billie Holiday, Dave Bartholomew, Jimmy Liggins, Glahe Musette Orchestra, and Rocky Bill Ford. 12/8/16  Television … It’s OverRated (or maybe just out of FOCUS)
Boob tube, idiot box, babysitter … whatever you call it, tonight’s show is all about television. Despite it NOT being a Christmas show, bobC insists on bearing gifts for the other two Chums (Kenn Morgan, Carl Thiel). In that spirit, we call Santa out for not getting Kenn’s Mallo Cup mug here on time (the bastard)!  As part of the first TV generation, the Chums talk the state of television when we were wee lads, enumerating personal favorites, remembering local programming, and the big historical events TV brought into our homes.  Kenn alerts us about the significance of being healthy ahead of schedule and relates the little-known connection between condoms and television. Our media-friendly song selections are by the Beatles, T.N.T. Tribble & Frank Motley, the Asylum Street Spankers, the Suburbans, the Firesign Theatre, the Skyhooks, Jim Backus (and friend), and Big Joe Turner. 11/8/16 The FOCUS … It’s OverRated All-Night Movie Show (in Technicolor)
This show we get all Siskely & Ebertish for our ThinkTwiceRadio audience as the Chums (Kenn Morgan, Carl Thiel, and bobCollignon) are joined by the awfully young Baron von Ticklebomb (AKA Robert Harris), movie maven extraordinaire. With bags of popcorn in hand (and mouth), we chew and chat all things cinema. While our resident Pedantic Didacticist, Richard Wicka, couldn’t appear this episode, we keep the cinematic trivia going as Mr. Harris (the darn kid!) continually identifies all kinds of stuff the clearly geriatric Chums have forgotten. Despite our poor memories, we still manage to bring up magical movie moments, personal favorites, guilty pleasures, and the stupid things movies have taught us. Song selections include Eugene McGuinness, the Kinks, the Olympics, and the Radio Syncopators. Visit our FOCUS Facebook page and please like us while you’re there.

10/12/16 The FOCUS … It’s OverRated Horrible Halloween Show
For our scary Sweet 16 show, the spooky chums (Kenn Morgan, Carl Thiel, and bobCollignon) are joined by the dour Polish Viking Prince, Eric Evinczik (co-host of ThinkTwiceRadio’s COBWEBS & STRANGE), who regales us with Halloween histories and other arcane matter. Over cider and doughnuts we talk about past Halloween costumes, candy corn, incubi and succubi, Polish Peeping Toms, and fondly remembering Candy Samples. You’ll also find out what we’re going to do with the Mallo Cup money we’ve accumulated over the past year and a half. Our resident Pedantic Didacticist, Richard Wicka, leads us in examining rule changing, scary clowns, and what dressing up once a year (or more frequently) does for us. Suitably spooky song selections include “Monster Mash” - Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett, “Apple Cider” - Doc Starkes & the Nite Riders, “Strange Brew” - Cream, “The Monster” - Bobby Please & the Pleasers, and “Season of the Witch” - Donovan. 9/13/16 Our Traditionally Over-Rated FOCUS Show
For our fifteenth show, our customary 59:59 seconds of intensely FOCUSed nonsense, the chums (Kenn Morgan, Carl Thiel, and bobCollignon) discuss the importance of following tradition (or not). We talk about the manly American tradition of growing up with Playboy magazine, the importance of eating dirt, and even practice comparing boobs to burgers. Listen as the chums try their thespian skills and fail disastrously at following the script. Listen further as we repeatedly sing the word “tradition” in excruciating three-part harmony. En route we don’t neglect our customary practice of spewing potty-talk amid deep psychological revelations. Our leader ‘bobC’ shares his plans for establishing Nude Sundays as a new tradition in his home. (His wife ain’t going for it, however.) We introduce a new segment called Deep Thinking with Kenn (or Kenn’s Cogitative Conundrums). AND!!! We have finally reached our five-dollar goal in our Magical Mellow Mallo Cup moment. Sing along with us as we follow tradition with such cool tunes as “A Change is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke, “Change is Now” by The Byrds, “Doctor My Eyes” by Jackson Browne, “I Can't Break the Habit of You” by Fats Waller, and go out with the Zombies’ classic “Time of the Season.” Visit our FOCUS Facebook page and please like us while you’re there.

8/2/16 The FOCUS…It’s OverRated Happiness/Holiness Show
The always cheery chums (Kenn Morgan, Carl Thiel, and bobCollignon), those inveterate pursuiters of happinessitude, search for joy, mirth and blissful abandon in this jubilant and elated fourteenth episode. Our resident Pedantic Didacticist, Richard Wicka, gets us to examine our collective attitudes toward all humans, in a happy smiley way, while relating the story of someone who can’t let go of the past. We also dissect the Rapture and those left-behind. We pursue our democratically allotted right to happiness with such songs as “Happy Boy” by the Beat Farmers, “Sha La La (Make Me Happy)” by Al Green, “If You Want to Be Happy” by Joe Dolce, “Not Happy” by Pere Ubu, and end with “What a Wonderful World” by Eva Cassidy. 7/5/16 The Damn! We Can’t Believe We Made It to FOCUS Show No. 13 … and It’s STILL OverRated (How Lucky is That?!)
From high atop the Magic Theatre, the chums (Kenn Morgan, Carl Thiel, and bobCollignon) say “fie” to black cats and walking under ladders, in the hope that good fortune will shine upon them as they discuss the benefits of luckiness and the number thirteen. In spite of triskaidekaphobia, each opines on the vicissitudes of luck, good or bad; bob (two small ‘bs’ one big ‘C’), in fact, feels tremendous fortunateness with his family and friends. Richard Wicka, resident Pedantic Didacticist, investigates Mexican simulacra and believes in making one’s own luck. Hold on to your lucky horseshoes and rabbit’s feet and listen to the songs “Mr. Lucky” by John Lee Hooker, “I Can’t Dance” by Tom T. Hall, “Good Luck Blues” by Washboard Sam, “I Feel Lucky” by Bobby Dick, and end with “Lucky, Lucky, Lucky Me” by a very young Annette Funicello. 6/7/16 The FOCUS … It’s OverRated Dirt Beneath Our Fingernails Gardening Show
Amid happiness and holiness, listen to the chums (Kenn Morgan, Carl Thiel, and bobCollignon) as we dig in to the subject of gardening here in Western New York. To that end, we welcome Jim Charlier, former president of Gardenwalk Buffalo, which takes place the last weekend of July. Since 1995, Buffalo residents have shown off their botanical efforts on a popular self-guided tour. This year, Buffalo can expect 60,000 to 70,000 visitors touring more than 400 gardens on display. Did you know that Arbor Day could be regarded as a movable holiday, celebrated not only in April but also in June? Richard Wicka, our resident Pedantic Didacticist speculates on the peace that can be had from sitting in a garden. We play the songs “Octopus’s Garden” by the Beatles, “Johnny’s Garden” by Stephen Stills, “Garden in the Sky” by the Blue Sky Boys, “Garden Party” by Rick Nelson, and end the show with “Where Have All the Flowers Gone” by the Kingston Trio. 5/3/16 The FOCUS … It’s OverRated Hobby-Pastime-Avocational (H-P-A) Show
This month, we pass the time pleasantly on the topics of hobbies, pastimes, and avocations (the H-P-A Platform). While the chums (Kenn Morgan, Carl “Charles” Thiel, and bobCollignon) parse the subtle differences among the three, listen as bobC does his radio voice (again!). Eavesdrop as Kenn describes pulling one off! Hear Carl giggle unabashedly! Because bob’s attempt at defining ‘pastime’ is repeatedly interrupted, we never succeed in bringing the topic around to art and whether “art” is a pastime, a hobby, an avocation or all three? Or none at all??? Richard Wicka, our resident Pedantic Didacticist, relates how the topic of hobbies is relevant to his life and reads a poem about finding motivation. In the second half of the show we are joined by Steve Siegel who talks about record collecting and his brand spanking new ThinkTwiceRadio show, “Rollin' on the River.” We play songs evocative of the H-P-A platform like “Girl Watcher” by the O’Kaysions, “Somebody Done Hoodooed the Hoodoo Man” by Louis Jordan, “The Old Master Painter” by Peggy Lee & Mel Torme, “America's Great National Pastime” by the Byrds, and end the show with “My Favorite Things” by John Coltrane. 4/5/16 The FOCUS … It’s OverRated Lucid Dreaming Sleep Show
Our regular gang of sleepy chums (Carl Thiel, Kenn Morgan and bobCollignon), who are all pro-sleep, talk about our pursuit of the gentle waters of Lethe. Topics include boring people, dream journals, pear-shaped dreams, and getting a black-eye from sleeping with someone. Dreamy guest Ron Ehmke takes a detour from his “Road to Nowhere” to bring us sleep-deprived guys a pharmacopeia of narcotics to induce contented sleep. Bob relates his adventures with somnambulism, twilight dreaming, and sleep bouncing. Richard Wicka, our resident Pedantic Didacticist, reads a poem about trying to sleep and relates his totally bizarre dream about getting a new face. To keep us moving our song selections include “I’m So Tired” - The Beatles, “Tossin’ and Turnin’” - Bobby Lewis, some Three Dog Night and Elvin Bishop, and we end the show with Ringo Starr crooning “Good Night.” Remember when the TV test pattern would signal that the world had gone to sleep and so should you?!
